The Mark of Quality

When photography has become ubiquitous and temporary, how do you make a statement with your work?  For many professionals, simply posting images electronically isn’t the highest and best use for showcasing superior work.  In order to set your work apart, and to make it stand out, you will want to consider high quality prints either framed or bound into an edition.

When you get serious about creating a collection of your images or showcasing an event in book format, the quality and workmanship of the album is a reflection of your own work.  A quality album not only shows that you care about your work, it elevates your photography in a way that loose prints and electronic posting cannot match.

As photographers ourselves, we understand the importance of esthetics and brand when you present your work.  [Read more…]

3 Reasons Custom Bat Mitzvah Albums are Better

As a photographer, you want the same design and craft to go into your albums that you’ve put into your photography.  After all, you’ve worked very hard with your client before and during the event, and spent many hours of post-production so that your images look their best.  Here are 3 reasons you should consider custom albums when working with your client, illustrated with a couple of projects we just completed with our photographer partners.

  1. Get out of the cookie cutter box! When you have to stay within the precise constraints and requirements of most album companies, your final project ends up looking like every other album in town.  Want it to look better?  Go custom!
  2. A custom album is unique.  Do you think your client will share raves of their album you sat down and personalized for them to…. everyone?!?!!  Of course they will.  We live in an age of mass produced items arriving in shipping containers.  A custom album, handcrafted in the USA shows that you care about your photography and your client.
  3. Consider how much more value a custom and personalized product will mean to your client.  A custom album has more value than wall portraits, retouching services or cheaper albums can possibly ever have.  Why?  Because there will always be exactly ONE custom album – duplicates are not possible. For your discriminating clients, this distinction creates greater value, which allows you a higher price point while providing your client with the superior product and service they’re seeking.  It’s a win-win.

Collaboration with your album company probably seems like a foreign concept to most photographers, but we do it regularly with the photographers and visual artists with whom we create projects. Case in point: This beautiful custom clamshell case was a combined effort between ourselves and the photographer, Heather McKay from Rochester, NY.

The book is our standard matte paper page block [Read more…]

The origin of “Artisan” “Craftsman” “Books”

The reason we chose these three words best describes ourselves and our relationship with you.

The term “Artisan” is defined as: A person or company that makes a high-quality or distinctive product in small quantities, usually by hand or using traditional methods.  Mass produced items can never be Artisan. Additionally the term may refer to knowledge regarding the source of the product; for instance, when Cowgirl Creamery offers an Artisan Cheese it means they know exactly which dairy farm(s) provided the raw milk for that particular lot. Adding Handmade Paper to Book Covers

It’s remarkable how the application of different cover treatments can support your design and overall look & feel.  You can go with a traditional leather cover, or a more contemporary look with some of our premium cover materials and bookcloths.  In this case, Wendy McGarry from New Hope, PA chose a soft and feminine look for a couple of 8.5″ x 8.5″ books which were finished in our Cover #3 (cloth and paper) and Cover #4 (cloth and paper).  Note that a complimentary watermark endsheet has also replaced our more typical vellum endsheet. Custom Panoramic Book

When you start “thinking outside the box” anything is possible!  So when we received a request from Lori Coleman (Lori and Erin Photography, Fairport, NY) to produce a custom panoramic book (8″ x 36″ open) in a size we don’t typically offer, we jumped at the opportunity.  Lori’s excellent design is showcased well in this one-of-a-kind pictorial art book of New Zealand. Lori also specified a custom cover with our C16 cover material paired with P1 black paper, and a custom vertical window. [Read more…]
